Volumetric capnography can reveal interesting physiological information on pulmonary gas exchange. Volumetric capnography parameters are calculated for all EXHALYZER®D multiple breath measurements using SPIROWARE® 3.3.x. A recent study in the Journal of Pediatrics by Neumann and colleagues describes tidal breathing measurements with the EXHALYZER®D in order to obtain volumetric capnography parameters in pre-term infants. The authors concluded that volumetric capnography “may serve as a simple, objective and inexpensive alternative to more complex lung function tests for determining the degree of lung injury in preterm infants.”
